I am unfortunately one of those people that make drinking negronis part of their personality trait. I am obsessed with the bitter Italian aperitif, especially one so perfectly chilled, and so perfectly balanced, that if it was the last negroni you ever had on earth, you'd be happy.

And it's not just my cocktail of choice when I'm out, I love making it at home too: three ingredients, lots of ice and gentle stir, before being transferred to an ice-cold tumbler that makes me feel like the fifth member of the SATC gang.

The three ingredients for a negroni are: gin, sweet vermouth and Campari. The gin should be a classic London dry, and the vermouth should always be sweet (the red kind) - you can't go wrong with martini rosso and carpano antica.

And making a negroni couldn't be simpler thanks to its 1:1:1 ratio, one part gin, one part vermouth and one part Campari.

A negroni is best served on the rocks. Never shaken. Shaking this drink will change its mouthfeel, instead you want to give it a few slow turns to dilute slightly without bruising the spirit.

How to make a Negroni Cocktail
1. Step 1Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with ice and add all three ingredients.
2. Step 2Using a cocktail spoon, give the spirits a few quick turns before straining into a tumbler filled with large cubes of ice.
3. Step 3Garnish with orange if you desire, we love an orange twist, slice or peel.

Our favourite twists on a Negroni:

Sbagliato: Apparently Nigella Lawson's favourite drink, a sbagliato replaces the gin with sparkling white wine or Prosecco.
Americano: Replace the gin with soda water.
Agavoni: Replace the gin with tequila blanco.
White negroni: Replace campari and sweet vermouth with Lillet blanc and Suze.
Boulevardier: Replace the gin with whisky.
