These Are The World's Best Doughnuts

You don't have to search the globe. (But then again, don't let us stop you.)

Yes, America's hole-punched, glazed version is one of the most popular takes on the doughnut, but that doesn't make it the best. Countries spanning from Mexico to Germany—and many places in between—can trace back some form of small, baked (or fried!) dough in their culinary lineage: the French beignet, and the Italian bombolone are both relatives. Today, the doughnut continues to evolve as new bakeries around the world put their spin on the classic treat. We poured a big cup of coffee and nose-dived into a search for the best ones around the world.

Doughnut Time

Food, Cuisine, Finger food, Ingredient, Dessert, Dish, Baked goods, Recipe, Snack, Gluten,

Although it has locations in Sydney, Melbourne, and on the Gold Coast, Australia's Doughnut Time first opened in Brisbane and calls the city home. The menu is full of cleverly named creations like the M&M-covered "Slim Shady," but our hearts really belong to the "Love at First Bite"—a cinnamon-sugar-dusted treat filled with Nutella.

Dough Darlings

Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, Dough Darlings makes its doughnuts with beloved ingredients from around Asia—the smooth, green tea-flavored filling of the "Matcha Bomb" and the smoky beef and chili-topped "Se'i Fuga" reference beloved Japanese and Indonesian fare, respectively. Dough Darlings, which exclusively accepts orders by text, call, or email, created a special menu to celebrate the Chinese New Year. This sweet and savory combination of Oolong tea and pistachio flavors looks like a sweet, nutty twist on a Chinese tradition.

Underwest Donuts

Cuisine, Food, Ingredient, Breakfast cereal, Breakfast, Rolled oats, Oat, Snack, Recipe, Dish,

New York City's Underwest Donuts (located in the hallway of a carwash) specializes in old-fashioned cake doughnuts, but puts a modern twist on the formula by glazing them with new-school ingredients like lavender, pretzels, and even candied orange. Our favorite is the Brown Butter doughnut, baked with generous amounts of rich, heated butter and topped with almonds.

The Donut Shop

Food, Cuisine, Brown, Ingredient, Dessert, Doughnut, Baked goods, Sweetness, Recipe, Finger food,

Copenhagen's The Donut Shop opened in 2014, but has been so successful that three other locations have opened up in the city since. The shop doesn't specialize in unheard-of flavors, but what the menu lacks in flashiness, it makes up for in flavor. The above combination of marzipan and caramel fudge is a crowd favorite, with fudge sourced from Belgium, naturally.

Munchies HK

Food, Cuisine, Baked goods, Dish, Ingredient, Finger food, Fast food, Snack, Meal, Breakfast,

Munchies in Hong Kong makes it a point to bake their doughnuts with organic, GMO-free ingredients. The menu is filled with a wide array of sweets, including cookies and ice cream, and the shop encourages visitors to mix their favorite flavors together. The best doughnut to start with? We recommend the s'mores option pictured above—it's already stacked.
