Peanut butter and jelly, bacon and eggs, Snoop and Martha: There are a lot of renowned dynamic duos in the culinary world. A lesser-known (but equally important) pair is the kitchen knife and the cutting board.
As a general rule of thumb, every kitchen should have at least two cutting boards: one for produce and one for raw meat, but their purpose goes beyond just making your food prep easier. As we said before, if you've invested in a solid set of kitchen knives, a good cutting board is a must-have companion. But it can be tough to determine when to replace your cutting boards and how to choose a new one. To get all the necessary details, we polled some experts, including Nicole Papantoniou, the Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Kitchen Appliances & Culinary Innovation Lab.
According to Papantoniou, it’s not so much about how often you should replace your boards; it’s more about what signs indicate it’s time to consider a new one. “Once they start getting warped, they’ll be hard to keep in place, so that’s when I would recommend replacing them.” She continued, “If a plastic board has too many grooves in it, you should replace it to avoid microscopic plastic particles from getting in your food. And when wooden cutting boards start cracking, that’s when you should replace them as well.”
Once you’ve confirmed that your cutting board is in need of retirement, there are a few things to keep in mind when searching for a new one. These include material (Wood! Plastic! Bamboo!), your needs and preferences, and of course, the reliability of the brand you’re considering. That’s why we’re here to help you find the best cutting board for your kitchen, from the safest, healthiest, and most sanitary cutting boards to the kinds Gordon Ramsay and other professional chefs use.

How we picked these products
To find the best cutting boards, we turned to our friends at the Good Housekeeping Institute, who have identified the best and highest-rated brands and put them to the test. Their team of on-staff experts—which includes all types: engineers! data analysts! registered dietitians!—rigorously put everyday products to the test (and then more and more tests) in their New York City-based labs to determine which ones you can trust.
From slicing tomatoes to carving roasts, these Kitchen Tech Experts put a bunch of boards (almost 40, in fact!) through rigorous tests to evaluate their user-friendliness, cleanability, liquid retention, and their ability to work with hard, slippery foods. After reviewing their findings and discussing their road tests in-depth with Papantoniou, we’ve determined that these are the best cutting boards you can buy in 2024.
