A dishwasher is a convenient way to wash dishes, especially if you spend a lot of time cooking. Given a dishwasher cleans dishes, you might forget that a dishwasher needs to be cleaned itself. We have a step-by-step guide on how to clean your dishwasher, but we're zeroing in on the one piece you might be leaving out: the dishwasher filter.
The filter traps pieces of food during the cleaning process. If it's not cleaned, these debris will sit and accumulate, which could cause odors or prevent your dishes from getting fully cleaned.
"Cleaning your dishwasher filter at least once a month will help your dishes come out cleaner, reduce the risk of a smelly dishwasher, and extend the lifespan of your appliance," said Ken Doty, chief operating officer at The Maids, a cleaning services company.
But there are some factors that might mean you need to clean it more frequently, according to Doty. If you're running your dishwasher often, loading dishes without removing food, or your dishes are coming out dirty, rather than clean, you might want to give the filter more frequent cleanings.
Not sure how to clean your filter? Follow these step-by-step instructions we put together with Doty's help.
1. Remove the filter
The dishwasher filter is typically located in the bottom of the dishwasher under the bottom rack. You can always check the user manual or search your model online for instructions on how to remove it if you can't get it loose.
2. Soak the filter
Rinse the filter and soak it in water with dish soap or vinegar to help loosen any food particles.
3. Scrub the filter with a brush
After soaking, use a small brush to remove any remaining debris.
4. Rinse the filter
Once everything is removed from the filter, give it a good rinse. Then place back in the dishwasher, and you're all set.
