As the star of TLC's Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro's introduced people to many things — cookies & cream lobster tails, blindfolded cupcake decorating, the delicate art of flying a remote-control helicopter through a bakery — but over Thanksgiving weekend, he shared a recipe that's bound to become a tradition for families everywhere. He calls it the cookie waffle. Yes, as in, chocolate chip cookie made in a waffle maker.
It all started with a quick video post, captioned "Who wants cookie waffle," showing his son, 13-year-old Buddy Valastro Jr., whipping up a batch of cookie dough. Commenters loved it. "His talent is bigger than my future," one wrote.
"The next Cake Boss!" chimed in another.
Next, Valastro posted a couple photos of said cookie waffles, including one of Valastro's youngest son, Carlo, giving his seal of approval.
The comments and likes kept rolling in, so Valastro filmed a quick tutorial, showing people exactly how it's done. You can use any chocolate chip cookie dough you'd like, forming it in your hands into a "waffle patty." Just make sure you spritz that iron with plenty of cooking spray before placing the disc of dough on the waffle maker.
"I like to use the highest [heat] setting, because I want it to crisp and come off," he explained. "That's the hardest part, is getting it off."
It's such a tricky part, actually, that he posted a follow-up video right after that one, detailing the final step of the process: divine intervention.
"Say a little prayer before you open it, because this is not exactly the easiest thing to get out of the waffle maker," Valastro said. "Please God, let it be there."
The Cake Boss placed a plate facedown on the waffle maker, flipping the appliance to get it to come out, noting that it was a dangerous trick to try. It was a success — mostly. A chunk of the cookie waffle stuck to the machine, but according to Papa Valastro, that's what vanilla ice cream is for. A few scoops on top, and no one's any wiser.
Cookie cakes have got nothin' on that.
