The Order of the Garter's annual service returned today after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Established in 1348 by King Edward III, who was inspired by stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, the Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain—and membership in the Order is an extremely big deal.

The group includes Queen Elizabeth, who is Sovereign of the Garter, though she did not appear today publicly due to her ongoing mobility issues, and many members of the royal family—including Prince Charles and Prince William.

The grand return to the Order's annual service, was slightly overshadowed by controversy surrounding whether or not Prince Andrew, a Knight of the Garter, would be appearing with the rest of the royal family, and protests at Windsor Castle today against former Prime Minister Tony Blair's appointment to the Order. Yet, the procession and service went on as normal.

Here are the best photos of Kate Middleton, Prince William, Princess Anne, and more royals at Garter Day 2022.

As was Princess Anne, who looked badass, as always. Instead of becoming a Lady of the Garter, Anne chose to become a Knight of the Garter—to hold the same rank as her brothers—in 1994.
