While making ad hoc labels with a Sharpie and some masking tape will get the job done, investing in a label maker will help you achieve a consistent and much neater look. And if your aim is total home organization, it's a smart purchase that may prove to be endlessly useful (and addictive). For this guide, we researched the top-tested label makers from several consumer review sites and cross-referenced with user reviews on Amazon. We also took note of the special features that each label maker offers that may appeal to different users. Read on to learn more about our top five best label makers.

Best Overall

DYMO LabelManager 500TS Touch Screen Label Maker

On Sale
DYMO LabelManager 500TS Touch Screen Label Maker

This top-of-the-line DYMO label maker is the one to get if you want the best and most efficient option that money can buy. It has a bright touch screen display, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, an expansive variety of text fonts, sizes, and styles, and the ability to print labels with multiple lines.

To edit text, users can toggle up and down, left and right, or they can tap the screen as they would on a smartphone. This model also has the benefit of connecting via cable to a computer to enable you the ability to print additional downloaded fonts, logos, and even bar codes.

It's pricey, but it's equipped with features that other digital label makers simply don't have while being far easier to use.

Best Flair Options

Brother P-Touch PTD210

On Sale
Brother P-Touch PTD210

A comfortable device to type on, the Brother P-Touch PT-D210 takes the guesswork out of digital label-making. In my experience with using this device, the fields are easy to toggle through and preview, and it prints quietly and with no delay.

This label maker offers 14 different fonts, 97 frames for adding a little flair to your text, along with 600 symbols to give your labels more of a washi tape-like personality. The device does run on six AAA batteries, but it also uses an AC power adapter if you'd prefer to use it plugged in.

Keep in mind that this label maker's default margins are pretty wide, so you'll need to adjust them in the device's settings to prevent wasting tape.

Best Manual Device

DYMO Embossing Label Maker

DYMO Embossing Label Maker

If you have a soft spot for analog technology and don't mind a bit of a wrist workout to get the exact embossed label that you want, this under-$20 label maker from DYMO is a steal.

The rotary wheel displays 49 letters, numbers, and symbols, and you have to turn the wheel and squeeze the trigger for each character you'd like to print. The label maker also makes a clean cut without wasting any tape.

This device comes with a three-pack of embossing tape and reviewers tout that they stick without issue (though it's not recommended for surfaces that you want to frequently wash).

Best Slim Display

DYMO LabelManager 160 Portable Label Maker

DYMO LabelManager 160 Portable Label Maker

A much more basic (and affordable) version of our best overall pick, the DYMO LabelManager 160 has an easy-to-navigate LCD screen, and you can toggle up, down, left, and right to edit your text.

It has a slim QWERTY keyboard that makes it a little more compact than the Brother P-Touch. Users can type on this one a little more naturally, as though they were texting. It has six font sizes, eight text styles, and over 200 emoticons and images for adding some personality to your labels.

Best Bluetooth Printer

NiiMbot D11 Label Maker

On Sale
NiiMbot D11 Label Maker

The smallest and most streamlined option, this label maker is purely for printing purposes. At about 5x3 inches, it's roughly the same size as the iPhone 12, making it perfect for storage.

Users can edit text quickly and easily through its dedicated smartphone app and then connect to it via Bluetooth to print. This label maker has the ability to print on multiple lines and can print bar codes and QR codes, as well as an expansive variety of graphics.

The device is rechargeable via micro-USB and comes in blue, pink, white, and black.
