Your local CVS may be closing its doors for good.

The drugstore chain is in the process of shuttering hundreds of more stores across the U.S. this year, a spokesperson confirmed to Good Housekeeping. This move comes following the closure of many locations in 2024, which included dozens of pharmacies in Target stores.

“As we first announced in November 2021, we’re realigning our retail footprint, reducing store density and optimizing our existing stores and pharmacies,” a CVS spokesperson shared in a statement. “We closed 900 stores between 2022 and 2024, and are planning to close an additional 270 stores in 2025.

Within the last year, the company has also cut about 5,000 jobs, per The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper reported that when it spoke to a CVS spokesperson, they said the effort to pare down has been made “based on [the company’s] evaluation of changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs."

So while we knew it was coming, it's still a bit of shock for avid CVS shoppers, especially as other drugstore chains have been seen massive closures as well. Both Walgreens and Rite-Aid have made efforts to reduce their retail presence as consumer shopping habits trend more towards online shopping instead of in person.

Rite-Aid filed for bankruptcy in July of 2024, and closed nearly 74 stores last year. Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth also announced earlier this year that the retailer is set to close a slew of underperforming stores by the end of 2027.

Though many stores are closing, CVS says it’s not pausing on opening new locations. “[W]e’re also opening stores and pharmacies in areas where there’s a need,” the company said in a statement. “In fact, we opened 100 stores between 2022 and 2024 and have plans to open nearly 30 CVS Pharmacy locations, including those inside Target stores, in 2025.”

CVS would not confirm the exact locations that will close (or will be opening), however, some sites have complied a list, again, not confirmed, based on local announcements.

At least this time, we’re happy to hear that there are new locations on the horizon.
