First it was haunted furniture, then it was spooky haunted real estate purchases (seriously, why?), and now it's... haunted baby monitors? Yes, you read that right. According to a report by The Washington Post, Natalie Wallace started noticing suspicious activity appearing on her Cocoon Cam baby monitor. The screen would show pink and purple blobs of color, which usually indicated movement—but her child was fast asleep.
Natalie's husband started noticing strange activity, too—the blobs appearing were eerily... human-like. In one photo obtained by the WP, it looks as though a person—or ghost—is hovering over their child, and in another it appears as if a whole ghost family is gathered around the bassinet. Tbh, I have the chills.
The Washington Post reached out to the baby monitor brand, Cocoon Cam, with the spooky activity in question.
“When the camera is properly installed, the computer vision would focus on the baby’s motions—waking, sleeping, even breathing,” Gary McMath, the company’s marketing chief, reportedly said in an email. The WP also notes that McMath said Cocoon Cam's system could be focusing on other movements, like lights, shadows, or blowing curtains that would be making these types of blobs. He also stated that the company has received a few calls and emails about a similar phenomenon.
Apparently, Natalie tested out other kinds of movement on her own using the baby monitor to compare the colorful blobs—her baby moving, her husband rocking their baby, and even the alarm clock. The pink and purple blobs looked nothing like the questionably-ghostly activity they saw the first time.
After the baby monitor fiasco, Natalie decided to switch to using just an audio monitor—this way she'll be able to hear her baby crying while she's downstairs instead of being royally spooked by the video she sees on the screen. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pretty good solution to me.
