We said it: dressing > stuffing.

Looking to liven up your Thanksgiving dinner table this year? As far as we're concerned, flying south is the easiest way to do it. And by that we mean borrowing some recipes from Southern cuisine, where all the best traditional Thanksgiving dishes just get even better. These 55 recipes take all best flavor combos from the South, including some of our favorite soul food dishes, and are anything but boring. So why not start your meal with deviled eggs at your Thanksgiving cocktail hour, and really show off with a pickle-brined turkey and pimento cheese corn muffins at dinnertime? You'll definitely appreciate all those leftover sausage balls, that's for sure!

Let's address the elephant in the (dining) room. Cornbread dressing vs. classic stuffing. In the South, cornbread dressing is the end all be all at the Thanksgiving table, and for good reason. Dressing is often made with sweet, nutty cornbread as well as sage-studded sausage, while stuffing is traditionally made with dried bread cubes. What they both have in common? Both stuffing styles are incredibly delicious, and you really cannot go wrong with whichever one you choose.

On turkey roasting duty this year? We love adding a bit of Southern flair to our bird by, wait for it, wrapping a turkey in bacon. We also love making turkey breast for a smaller crowd, especially this cranberry-glazed BBQ turkey breast. Want to completely pivot away from the bird? We think our recipes for copycat Honey Baked Ham and chicken-fried mushrooms and gravy are the most delicious new additions to our Southern-inspired spread.

Cornbread Dressing

Parker Feierbach

You might be wondering, as we did, what the real difference is between stuffing and dressing. Online research yielded unclear results—we couldn't find any notable disparities. Then food editor Makinze told us that dressing is stuffing that is cooked separately (i.e., not stuffed into the carcass of the turkey). So, nowadays, most "stuffing" is actually, technically dressing. The more you know!

Sautéed Mustard Greens

When you think “greens”, what comes to mind? For many Southerners growing up, the image was of a large pot of Southern-style braised greens, swimming in seasonings, the bitterness mellowed in a long, slow cook. Infusing it all: smoky ham hocks or bacon ends and a dash or two of spicy pepper vinegar or hot sauce. We'll have seconds, please.

To make this delicious vegetarian side dish, you'll toss a pound of steamed carrots in a slightly spicy honey-butter glaze. Rather than cooking the carrots and the glaze together in the pan, you'll cook the carrots and the glaze separately, reducing the risk of mushy veggies.
