Every State Has A Prime Trick Or Treating Town, And This is Yours

AKA where to find more full-size candy bars—and fewer apples or popcorn balls.

There are a lot of ways to measure how fun a night of trick or treating will be, but no one attacks the puzzle quite as logically as the folks at 24/7 Wall St. The site created an index with four measures—poverty rates, housing occupancy rates, violent crime rates, and the percentage of the population that's less than 14-years-old—to land on the best trick or treating spots across the country. Alabama: Margaret

Population 14-years-old and younger: 36.6%

Besides the fact that this Alabama town is teeming with little ones, its violent crime record (only 65 incidents per 100,000 people) make its a great trick or treating destination.

Alaska: Valdez

Population 14-years-old and younger: 22.7%

The city hosts a Halloween carnival every year on the evening of Halloween. It's also a pretty scenic spot to walk around, as it's surrounded by parks and forests.

Arizona: Gilbert

Population 14-years-old and younger: 26.2%

Gilbert has a lot of residents—226,000, to be exact—which tends to translate to more houses kids can hit up. There are also lots of haunted houses and museums nearby for bigger kids.

Arkansas: Cave Springs

Population 14-years-old and younger: 24.6%

The poverty rate in this city is only 2.5%, which is 16 points lower than the state's average rate. There are also activities to hit up before or after kids go in search for candy, including the Ozark Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch.

About 32% of the households here have a median annual income of more than $200,ooo so kids might have some king-size candy bars in their future. And speaking of kids, there are a lot of them, meaning yours will be in good company.

You know those dark-windowed, uninhabited houses that are major bummers on Halloween? You're less likely to run into one here, since 98% of housing units are occupied.

Atlantans don't have to travel far to get here: The city's just 27 miles away. In Johns Creek, parents are reassured by a low violent crime rate. It's just 31 incidents per 100,000 people.

Many of the kids here are from military families, and there are tons of them. This year, Halloween falls on a Wednesday, but a nearby haunted village—Waipahu—is open on Fridays and Saturdays throughout October.
