It isn't truly the holiday season until you've binge-watched some of the classics—National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, anything Rankin/Bass, and of course, How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Whether you're strictly a fan of the Boris Karloff-narrated version from the '60s, or you love quoting along with Jim Carrey in the live-action version, one thing's for sure: Your watch party gets a whole lot more interesting with these Grinch-y Jell-o shots. Things get even more interesting when you turn it into a drinking game.
Choose which rules work for you—and whether you want to supplement the game with cocktails (or water, for your liver's sake), so you're not just doing Jell-o shots all night.
If you're watching the original:
- Take a shot whenever the narrator references the size of the Grinch's heart.
- Whoever notices Cindy Lou Who first gets to pick someone to take a Jell-o shot.
- Drink whenever you hear "all the Whos down in Whoville."
- Drink whenever Max (the dog) looks woefully at the Grinch.
- Take a shot whenever somebody says "roast beast."
- Drink when the Grinch tugs at his too-tight shoes.
If you're watching the live-action version:
- Whoever shouts "cheermeister!" first after somebody says "cheermeister" on screen gets to pick someone to take a shot.
- Take a shot whenever the Grinch's echo insults him.
- Drink anytime someone says "Martha May Whovier."
- If somebody squeals when the baby Grinch is shown on-screen (because they're dying of cuteness, obvs), he or she must take a shot.
- Drink whenever somebody says "roast beast."
- Take a shot whenever somebody references the size of the Grinch's heart.
- Drink whenever the Grinch veers into Ace Ventura-era Jim Carrey.
These shots work well using vodka, but they're equally smooth if you use tequila. (In fact, they taste a little more like a margarita Jell-o shot that way.) What truly makes these shots shine, though, is the lime juice and sanding sugar rim. This touch gives the treat a sweet-tart flavor, much like the big green guy's attitude throughout both films.
