While singing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," it's easy to belt out the words "So bring us some figgy pudding" without a second thought. But have you ever wondered what exactly figgy pudding even is?
Well, for starters it's not even technically the type of pudding you're probably thinking of. At first glance it kind of looks like a gelatinous fruit cake, complete with a drizzle of sugary frosting to top it off, or an ornamental bough of holly.
The dessert originated in England and is often referred to as "Christmas pudding" as well, according to NPR. While some recipes include dried figs, that's not always the case. The classic version of the dish includes thirteen ingredients (as a homage to Jesus Christ and his twelve apostles) and is mostly compiled of raisins, currants, and brandy. Umm...yum?
To make things even more interesting, the dessert is covered in brandy on Christmas Day and is then set on fire because, why not?
The English really can get away with anything, can't they?
