I Worked At The State Fair One Summer & These Recipes Still Haunt My Dreams

My family still talks about how I smelled like corn dogs for two weeks straight.

Though it’s been years (decades? 😫 let’s just not count.) since I worked at my hometown’s county fair for two weeks when I was 17, any hot summer day can still take me back: Riding high on the Ferris wheel, winning stuffed prizes along the midway, visiting livestock up close and personal, catching a death-defying show…if I close my eyes, I can almost transport myself right back to that infamous summer. The absolute best part? The FOOD. I was slinging corn dogs and snow cones, but there was an unofficial barter system among all the vendors, so I got to try every deep-fried, sticky-sweet, wild, and crazy state fair food I could find. Though it’s harder to find a carnival to visit nowadays, whenever I want to feel like a teenager again, I know I can enjoy the most famous carnival foods from the comfort of my own kitchen. Take a ride through our list of 19 state fair recipes with me and do the same!

Hush puppies are similar to cornbread in that they're both made from a cornmeal batter, but hush puppies are shaped into balls and deep fried to give that crispy exterior with a soft middle while cornbread is baked in the oven. Essentially, you can think of hush puppies as deep fried balls of cornbread...and who wouldn't want that?
