Starbucks has announced that they'll have a new drink called the "flat white" starting on January 6 [via Eater.

The problem is, there's a bit of dissent as to what a flat white actually is.

Apparently, Australian and British Starbucks stores have been selling flat whites for years, but they're just now coming to America. Australians have two common drinks: the long black, which is espresso with a little hot water, and the flat white, which they consider to be what Americans call a latte (espresso with steamed milk).

But since we already have lattes, an American Starbucks representative redefined the flat white as, "Two ristretto espresso shots — which are smaller and more concentrated — topped off with whole milk steamed to a 'micro foam.'"

Microfoam, coffee roaster Allie Caran told Bon Appetit, is "a denser, richer layer between the light, airy foam above and the steamed milk below."

So it's a latte, then! Or a cappuccino? Who knows, but it sounds delicious.
