What do Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Cappuccino, Wavy Mango Salsa, and Wasabi Ginger all have in common? Believe it or not, they are all chip flavors! Or potential chip flavors, that is.
Lay's Do Us A Flavor contest got over 14 million submissions this year and the flavors above are the finalists. Fans can vote for their favorite anytime between July 28 and October 18, 2014, and all four flavors will be available nationwide for a limited time. The winner will receive $1 million or 1% of their flavor's net sales through July 1, 2015 — and a longer shelf life than the other three chips.
We tried all four flavors here at Delish and our favorite was the Wasabi Ginger. They really do have that quintessential wasabi kick and a not-too-overpowering gingery finish.
Surprisingly, the next best one was Bacon Mac & Cheese, which pretty much just tasted like cheddar-flavored chips (no complaints here) with a rather odd bacon-esque aftertaste.
Unfortunately, we weren't too fond of Mango Salsa and Cappuccino. One taster noted that while she would dip chips in mango salsa any day, you don't really want the chip itself to taste like mango. And the fruity flavoring was reminiscent of candy, which also doesn't pair particularly well with potato chips.
In last place was Cappuccino, which definitely did not do as a flavor. We were wary of this one from the beginning and our suspicions were validated — we'll stick to drinking our cappuccinos and eating our chips from now on.
Check out all four flavor descriptions below and tell us which chip flavor you want to try!
Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese: An all-American classic. The creamy, sharp tang of melted and toasted cheddar cheese with smoky notes of Applewood bacon.
Cappuccino: Earthy, bold espresso notes along with soft, creamy dairy and just a hint of cinnamon.
Wavy Mango Salsa: A big hit of tangy mango backed up with a hint of pineapple, onion, and just a little spice and smoky character of chipotle.
Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger: The characteristic "punch" of wasabi blended perfectly with just the right amount of soy sauce and pickled ginger.
