The supermarket checkout is typically surrounded by chocolate bars, candy, and gum. But that will no longer be the case in the UK, where their biggest grocery chain has banned candy in the checkout aisle.

The Guardianrepots that Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket chain, received feedback from their customers that they would prefer not to have the temptation of stacks of sweets at the checkout aisle. "Tesco found that 65% of shoppers wanted confectionery removed from checkouts to help them make healthier choices when shopping," reported the Guardian. "Even more (67%) said it would help them choose healthier options for their children."

The store had previously removed candy from 740 stores 20 years ago, but after the latest research, they decided to take further action and remove candy from ALL of their checkouts, which includes 1,800 convenience stores. "We all know how easy it is to be tempted by sugary snacks at the checkout, and we want to help our customers lead healthier lives," said chief executive Phillip Clarke.

Do you think supermarkets in the States should follow the Tesco model? Do you think not having candy at the checkout will prevent you from purchasing candy altogether?
