Photographer Dinah Fried says she devours books like food — and she remembers her favorite stories by the vivid dishes the characters eat. For her final design school project, she began recreating the scenes of memorable literary meals, and quickly became obsessed with getting every detail just right. For instance, she refused to shoot Moby Dick's meal until she found the perfect pewter beer stein, and a serendipitously discovered skeleton key completed her Secret Garden shot.
The painstakingly perfect result is an addicting series of tablescapes that transport us back to the classic stories everyone grew up reading.
Here are some of our favorite shots. Find the rest in Fried's book, Fictitious Dishes.
