The Girl Scouts launched the cookie to allow girls with celiac disease and sensitivity to gluten to take part in the tradition of both eating and selling the cookies. "We've developed a delicious new bite size Girl Scout cookie that's 100% gluten free — and we're welcoming a whole group of people to the cookie sale," stated the Girl Scout's website. The Girl Scouts are working with their partner, ABC Bakers, to select a group of Girl Scout councils that will pilot the new cookie as part of the 2014 Cookie Sale.

Given that approximately 3 million people have gluten intolerance, the Girl Scouts believe the Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookie will be a huge success. The cookie will be made with real chocolate chips, butter, and a blend of rice and tapioca flours. They are 130 calories for a serving of four cookies.

But here's the catch: The new treats are only available in select states, including California, Virginia, Wisconsin, Maine, and Pennsylvania. (For a listing of specific markets, visit this website.) According to the Girl Scout's website, they will conduct research both during and after the sale to determine if the cookie will eventually go national.

National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend officially kicks off on February 7. Which cookies are you planning to buy?
