Are you a fan of General Mills' Monsters Cereals? Franken Berry, Boo Berry, and Count Chocula have developed something of a cult-like following since they first became a Halloween tradition back in the 70s. However this year is extra-special in the land of cereal bowl monsters because two of the old-school varieties, Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy, will also be back on supermarket shelves. It's been 20 years since Yummy Mummy was "wrapped" up for good and 25 since Frute Bute retired.
Not only are these cereal favorites back, but this is also the first time ever that all five are available for consumption in the same year. So when the Delish office received a shipment of Monsters Cereals in the mail, we immediately knew what had to be done. We tried all five Monsters Cereals — together, in one bowl.
And you know what? It was pretty delicious. Now if you're more of a plain Cheerios kind of cereal person, then mixing together five sugary flavors might not the best breakfast option. But if being reminded about the Monsters Cereals conjures memories of happily munching Count Chocula before school in full costume or grabbing a handful from the box when your kids weren't looking, then we recommend some experimenting.
After pouring equal amounts of each of the Monsters, we mixed them all together, added some milk, and tried that first fateful spoonful. Once the initial sugar bomb shock subsided, the hybrid cereal was just as good if not better than each of the individual kinds. Every bite was mostly fruity (thanks to the fact that four out of five are fruit-themed) with an underlying hint of chocolate in each spoonful. The marshmallows didn't change the experience much since all five contain the Lucky Charm-like additions. After soaking in the milk for a bit, much of the sweetness is infused into the remaining liquid, leaving behind the only unpleasant part of the experience-a purplish-brownish milk that was not particularly reminiscent of any one of the cereals.
In case you plan on sticking to just one Monster this year, here is some info on the individual options:
Count Chocula: Chocolate-flavored cereal with colorful marshmallows. These chocolaty bites reminded us of a slightly less intense version of Cocoa Puffs.
Boo Berry: Blueberry-flavored cereal with colorful marshmallows. We know Boo Berry and blueberry sound alike, but this fruity flavor brought grape candy to mind.
Franken Berry: Strawberry-flavored cereal with colorful marshmallows. These red-hued shapes are the mildest of the bunch. If you are looking for something sweet but a little less intensely fruity then Franken Berry could be the right choice.
Frute Brute: Fruit-flavored cereal with lime-flavored marshmallows.
Yummy Mummy: Fruit-flavored cereals with vanilla-flavored marshmallows. Despite the fact that both Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy have the same description (marshmallows aside) we were convinced that Frute Brute tastes like Froot Loops while Yummy Mummy is very similar to Fruity Pebbles.
What is your favorite Monsters cereal? Would you try them all together?
