Deep-fried foodstuff at the Texas State Fair can get pretty competitive. According to the Houston Chronicle, the winners and finalists were crowned on Monday and this year a deep-fried Cuban roll featuring ham, pork shoulder, cheese, and pickles won the top prize of "Best Taste." Isaac Rousso spent two years developing the Cuban roll. "What comes out is just an explosion of flavor," he explained. The "Most Creative" award went to a Thanksgiving dinner, which consisted of stuffing, turkey, and creamed corn rolled into a ball and deep-fried, of course.

There were eight finalists overall and all of their fried creations will be available for purchase at the fair between September 27 and October 20.
