The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced a recall of 22,800 pounds of chicken, ham, and beef products that were prepared at Reser's Fine Foods in Topeka, Kansas. The products were distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
The products are being recalled because of a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis. According to Mayo Clinic, a listeria infection can be fatal for unborn babies, newborns, and people who have weakened immune systems. Mayo Clinic cites symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea, followed by more serious symptoms if the infection spreads to your nervous system, such as headache, stiff neck, confusion or changes in alertness, loss of balance, and convulsions. If you think you have consumed food tainted with listeria and experience these symptoms, contact your doctor.
