Get ready, New York City residents. You're about to get your very first Denny's! But you can't celebrate with a drink at the famed breakfast spot unless it's past a certain hour.
Residents of New York's Battery Park City shot down Denny's pitch to start serving alcohol at 10am on weekdays and 8am on Saturdays because of concerns about having "the kind of person who wants to have a drink before noon" flocking to their neighborhood. Community Board 1 pushed the hours back to 11am on weekdays and 10am on Saturdays, a compromise that eventually led to liquor license approval for the chain in a unanimous vote.
Some residents are still grumbling about Denny's receiving a liquor license at all. The owner's reassurance that "Liquor is just an amenity, a side dish," not the focus of his franchise, did little to help. The 150 Nassau St. location is set to open in May.
