Cronuts™ — croissant dough that is deep fried into a buttery, flaky, doughnut-like creation — have been all the rage since Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City started serving them this Spring.
More From Delish: Who Really Invented Cronuts?
The Manhattan bakery ultimately trademarked the term "cronut," but everyone still wants to get in on the cronut game. Now bakeries around the globe are offering their spins on the fried pastry, with plenty of strange names attached. Here, we take a look at some of the latest cronut-like creations.
Doughssants
Chicago's West Town Bakery recently started offering doughssants. Unlike cronuts, these treats aren't circular — they feature rectangular layers of crispy croissant and come in chocolate raspberry, blueberry lavender, and coffee cream cheese flavors.
Doissants
In early June, Washington, D.C.'s tannounced its doughnut-croissant creation on its Facebook page: "We've made it happen people! This [is our first] batch of the croissant and donut mix and we are calling them doissants. Chocolate croissant base with hazelnut cream inside and a pistachio topping. (Cronut is trademarked.) Still testing out recipes and batches…"
Folks in Indianapolis can enjoy doissants as well. Circle City Sweets announced its version on Twitter at the end of May.
Crescent Doughnuts
Yes, even Pillsbury found a way to jump on the cronut train. The brand offers a recipe for Salted Caramel Crescent Doughnuts on its website, which of course uses Pillsbury brand refrigerated crescent dinner rolls.
Crullant
Semi Sweet Bakery felt bad that there were Los Angelenos envying NYC's cronut, so it introduced its version, called a crullant.
Squats
Dominique Ansel Bakery isn't the only New York City spot selling unique croissant-doughnut creations. In Brooklyn, Le Petit Bakery is offering a square version for $4 each. One is covered in bacon — yes, bacon — and it got rave reviews from the editors at Gothamist.
Dossant
You don't have to live in the States to enjoy this flaky, fried creation. Melbourne, Australia's MoVida Bakery began offering dossants in May. Versions have included sour cherry, chantilly, lemon curd, and dried strawberry.
