NASA's space shuttle program may have retired, but the space race continues.

Domino's announced its ambition to be the first pizza parlor on the moon. Part publicity stunt, part seemingly sincere expansion plan, the Japanese arm of the pizza chain released plans last week for its lunar pizza station, which, according to awebsite dedicated to the project, will include a two-story dome with a view of the moon's surface, a playroom (including trampoline) for the restaurant's staff, and a garden for growing fresh produce for toppings.

The renderings come courtesy of construction firm Maeda Corp, and the estimated cost for the outer space eatery is Y 1.67 trillion (about $2.52 billion.) While The Daily Telegraphreports that much of that investment would go toward transporting 70 tons of construction materials and pizza-making supplies, the company hopes to contain costs by using lunar mineral deposits to mix the concrete needed for the plans.

"We started thinking about this project last year, although we have not yet determined when the restaurant might open," Tomohide Matsunaga, a spokesman for Domino's, told The Daily Telegraph. But he said that Domino's expects an emerging market.

"In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon," he said.
