Pancakes taste best when dad makes them. And they taste even better when he gets creative on the griddle. Happy faces, hearts, the occasional Mickey Mouse. But some dads get more creative than others, and this one has taken it to a whole other level. Kevin Blankenship is an Oklahoma City based writer and producer who started experimenting with designing pancakes for his two young sons about a year ago. "In college, I was a cartoonist, and I've never been able to let it go," he says. "But, when you're a parent, there's not a whole lot of time to spend on hobbies." Here's how he does it:
I started with basic shapes, like Mickey Mouse, which is just three circles, and got a sense of how quickly things brown and then looked around at what some other food artists were doing and I saw that they were using squeezable condiment containers to draw out lines. The darker areas (like eyes, the webbing on Spiderman's suit, and so on) I put down on the pan first and then fill in the other areas little by little.
It's been about a year, and Blankenship's pancake innovations show no sign of slowing down. Right now, he's working on mastering Clint Eastwood in "High Plains Drifter".
