Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away on April 17, at the age of 92. And while most will remember the Bush matriarch for her tight-knit family, her literacy efforts, and her grandmotherly charm, she had a secret affinity for all things food, too. Here are some of our favorite stories.

When her wedding cake was picture-perfect.

A wedding cake for a 19-year-old bride — which Barbara was — could go very wrong. (Think: a unicorn cake or a tacky crystal-covered one.) But Barbara's was insanely classy: Three white tiers covered in delicate frosting and topped with an understated bunch of flowers.

When she threw spaghetti dinners for complete strangers.

During George H. W. Bush's presidential run, Barbara would organize pasta nights during receptions held for potential voters in Texas. Rumor has it, she cooked the spaghetti herself and served it on paper plates.

When she decorated the White House Christmas tree with food.

During the holidays, Barbara was known for baking a mean gingerbread cookie. She'd make the little men both for eating and for decorating the main White House tree.

When she made history — with a cookie recipe.

Family Circle launched its regular Presidential Cookie Poll — an election-time cookie face-off, with recipes from the two potential first ladies — in 1992, with recipes from Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton. Clinton won the inaugural competition, but Barbara's chocolate chip cookie recipe is still an internet favorite.

When she kept drinking bourbon during her final days.

A source close to the Bush family told CBS News details of the night before Barbara passed. Apparently, she was comfortably relaxing at home, surrounded by family, with a glass of bourbon in hand.
