Actress Alicia Vikander's spent most of her career playing demure, period roles, so to take on the part of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider — first made famous by Angelina Jolie — she went through a pretty big transformation. Before starring on the big screen, Vikander was a ballerina, so it was bulking up, not losing weight, that she had to focus on. Take one look at the Tomb Raider trailer — or the pap-snapped photo of Vikander and her six-pack on a boat last summer — and you'll see she accomplished the task at hand.
A lot of weight lifting contributed to Vikander's new look, but so did a special diet that's been generating major buzz. "Since we were traveling so much over the holidays, we decided the Keto diet would be best because it's easier to control the macros that way," her trainer Magnus Lygdback told PopSugar. Macros, or macronutrients, are what make up the caloric content of food, and on Keto, you want to restrict carbs and increase fat.
It wasn't easy, Lygdback divulged to PopSugar: "It's always tricky the first couple of days, but [Alicia's] willpower is just unbelievable, and she didn't complain, even though I could see she was struggling a little bit." He had her on a strict diet, with seafood as her main source of protein. She loaded up on vegetables, but with one caveat: Vikander's carb count couldn't go over 25 grams everyday, so green veggies fit the bill better. To get fat, Lygdback had the actress eat lots of avocado and included coconut oil and MCT oil in many meals.
Vikander began the strict diet two months before filming, and thanks to the trailer, the result is now clear: A woman who kicked ass and took names — with some ripped arms and abs, to boot. Check her out in theaters when Tomb Raider drops on March 16.
