The cost of nearly everything is noticeably higher than it should be, and inflation is the most obvious at the grocery store. Everything from produce to snacks has seemingly skyrocketed in price the past few years. Once you combine the incremental price increases of your basic pantry essentials, the extra spending can be major.

There was the egg shortage earlier this year. Butter has become almost prohibitively expensive. Even celebrities like Cardi B have publicly complained about the cost of groceries. And on X, formerly known as Twitter, a new trend has users posting their grocery hauls and how much they spent on them.

The hauls are undoubtedly expensive. Several users reported spending upwards of $200 on a week’s worth of food. But the overwhelming response to these posts aren’t about inflation—instead, they’re critiquing the items in their cart.

“That’s $45 worth of ‘juice,’” one user commented on the post above. Another chimed in with, “Wasting $200 like this is crazy.”

Critics argue that avoiding snacks and processed foods and stocking up on vegetables and basic pantry items instead is a more cost-effective way to shop. We can understand why some people rely on more convenient meals, but one grocery haul in particular is honestly indefensible:

What exactly does someone do with 20 bottles of honey? People online asked the same question, but couldn’t come up with an answer. Some commenters even theorized that these posts are purposely trying to confuse and upset people.

“These posts have to all be bait,” someone wrote.

Aside from all of the critiques, a few people focused on the original point of the trend: to discuss rising grocery prices.

One user commented, “everyone is replying that ur making 'bad decisions' and not focusing on the fact that EITHER WAY, the price on these things is RIDICULOUS. like yes or no?!”
