I’ll admit it, I’ve never been a big seltzer girl. At summer barbecues and other get-togethers, I’m always the one fishing through the cooler, desperately looking for anything that’s not a White Claw (often with little success). When Nütrl—a vodka-based hard seltzer brand—offered me a chance to taste-test a few of their flavors, I was pretty hesitant to take them up on it. But, for the sake of journalism (and the promise of free drinks for a day), I gave these fizzy drinks a shot. Consider this my official Nütrl seltzer review.

Unless you live under a rock, you've likely noticed that spiked seltzers have taken over the world. Everyone from Travis Scott to Gordon Ramsay himself seems to have their own line of hard seltzers, but aside from good marketing, very little actually sets these drinks apart from one another. And at first glance, Nütrl is more of the same: it has a 4.5% ABV, has 100 calories, and comes in a sippable 12-ounce can. With 12 total flavors ranging from pineapple to black cherry and several variety packs, there’s no shortage of options.

What sets Nütrl apart is that the brand uses real fruit juice from pineapples, watermelon and berries rather than artificial sweeteners. Upon first sip, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the beverage had a powerfully fruity taste without any of the static-y, sickly sweetness I was expecting.

My favorite flavor was orange, which had bright, tangy notes of citrus and a pleasing bubbly texture. I also loved the mango and raspberry options—they offered a similar refreshing burst with no syrupy aftertaste. If you're a fan of watermelon, you'll probably enjoy Nütrl's rendition, too (though it was a little too watery for my personal preferences).

My least-favorite flavor by far was Nütrl's vodka lemonade, simply because it's been done before. People who like spiked lemonades will likely still enjoy this flavor, though it doesn't necessarily taste any different from other options on the market in my opinion.

All in all, Nütrl's line of vodka seltzers offer a refreshing, real-fruit take on the biggest drink of the summer. People who already love the taste of spiked seltzers will likely be obsessed with these flavor-forward beverages, and even if you don't traditionally enjoy sweet drinks, these might surprise you. For me, I can safely say I’ll be formally requesting at least one can of Nütrl at the next cookout I attend.
