Put down those cashews. The halved nuts could contain salmonella.

Over the weekend, Maya Overseas Food Inc. in Maspeth, NY issued a recall for nearly 8,000 pounds of split cashews that have been in circulation since February. Thanks for the heads up guys.

Fortunately there have been no known illnesses to date, and the recall comes in light of a recent routine of FDA sampling which discovered traces of the bacteria in bulk containers. The company has since ceased production until further notice and strongly encourages any and all consumers to avoid eating the product.

If you've got a container in your pantry, check the date and the UPC code. Potentially unsafe cashews were distributed between February 18 and March 20 to retailers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Florida. The UPC codes are as follows:

  • 7-ounce containers — UPC 020843230389
  • 14-ounce containers — UPC 020843230716
  • 28-ounce containers — UPC 020843230327
  • 5-pound containers — UPC 020843230303

If you're uneasy either way, send back your cashews for a full refund. And if you still have questions, contact the company at 718-894-5145.

Sadly, this recall joins the numerous others we've seen in first half of 2015 alone. Between Blue Bell's lysteria crisis, Wish Bone's fake ranch dressing, and so many more, it really makes you wonder: Is nothing sacred anymore?
