Dunkin' Donuts is doing its part to save the planet by switching out their iconic styrofoam cups for new recyclable plastic coffee carriers. Though styrofoam is good for resisting liquid damage (and keeping the heat off your hands), it's not so good for the environment because it non-biodegradable. The change will take effect immediately at some locations while others won't switch over until next year.
We'd like to think Dunkin' was thinking of the baby sea turtles, but the decision actually resulted from New York City's new law banning all styrofoam containers and cups, which went into effect on July 1. Before looking too similar to Starbucks and going with paper cups, the coffee and donuts company did some serious research in selecting their replacement material, choosing polypropylene aka recyclable plastic. That reusable bit is the good news for concerned environmentalists because the brand sells 30 cups of coffee every second, says Huffington Post.
Though only NYC and a few other cities are requiring the material swap, Dunkin' is aiming to roll out the eco-friendly cups nationwide by 2016. The replacement cups are also being served in select locations in Massachusetts, Vermont, and California with plans for further expansion. Yay for sustainability! Now American can run, and rerun, on Dunkin'.
