New York Times / Dominic Perri

On Wednesday afternoon the New York Times asked its Twitter followers and Cooking subscribers to do the unthinkable: add peas to guacamole. "Trust us," they said. Mmhmm, famous last words.

Cue a flood of angry (or hangry?) remarks, outraged opinions, and jokes from chefs, home cooks, and even the POTUS. The recipe in question folds three avocados with a half pound of sweet peas, which food columnist Melissa Clark describe as adding an "intense sweetness", "chunky texture," and a "bright hue."

Here's the tweet that started it all:

But President Obama firmly yet gracefully disagrees.

Meanwhile the Texas GOP gets a little salty.

But the Times struck back with a second, this time tongue-in-cheek, tweet loaded with additional recipes.

Some other followers got punny.

Some thought it was genuinely a joke.

Others questioned their relationship with the Times.

Some got a little saucy.

And then others (strangely) paid more attention to the prep time.
