The Golden Arches at McDonald's locations across the country could come tumbling down by the end of the year. For the first time in four decades, the fast-food chain will shutter more U.S. restaurants than it's opening.

Nearly 700 of the chain's restaurants closed during the first half of 2015, but it's unclear just how many locations will follow suit by the year's end. This downsizing is in stark contrast to the company's original "supersize" concept—and it follows the burger joint's new "mini meals" being tested at select locations. However, this kind of slim-down hasn't hit the chain since 1970, according to the Associated Press. Despite this, the company doesn't seem to be worried: Becca Hary, a spokeswoman for McDonald's, pointed out that the reduction is minimal when compared to the total number of American locations, which hovers around 14,300.

Let's hope the outposts slated to close-up shop aren't any of the coolest and craziest McDonald's across the country—you know the ones with tree-house PlayPlaces, Rock-n-Roll memorabilia, and flying saucer exterior.
