At some point between searching Seamless and answering the door for the delivery man, someone decided that ordering food online was a hassle. If you ask us, it's already a little too easy to get take-out, but many disagree—especially the team behind Fooji, a new delivery service that will send you dinner after you tweet a food emoji.
It seems that this idea was hatched from the recent social media stunt from Domino's, which now offers pizza delivery via tweet—sometimes using only the pizza emoji. But Fooji, named after an amalgam of "food" and "emoji," has taken a very unique angle: Instead of sending order instructions, or a series of emojis, to describe what you'd like, you can only tweet a single character to @gofooji. From there, the delivery service will choose your meal—and even the local restaurant it comes from—for you. It's a guessing game (or crap-shoot, depending on how you look at it) when it comes to what you'll receive when you answer the door, but the creators like to think of it as a "food adventurer's dream."
Up for the thrill of it all? Join the beta group and get a meal on the house by sending the company a direct message on Twitter. Still think this sounds a little wacky? Well, the Fooji team doesn't really care what you think. Those with picky preferences or allergies are SOL on this one. "If you can't stand the fooji, get out of the kitchen," the site's FAQ warns. Debuting in New York in June, the roulette-like service plans to launch in cities across the country shortly thereafter. If you're rearing to try out the service, you can ask Seamless to add Fooji to your town.
With a slew of new food emojis launching next year (hello, bacon and avocado!), the possibilities will expand ten-fold. While spaghetti and burgers can vary slightly, they're fairly safe bets. And tuna sashimi is about as straight-forward as it gets. But what happens when you tweet something more obscure like an eggplant, bunch of grapes, or the forthcoming cucumber? And what about booze? I'd love a pair of Proseccos delivered to my door—you know, for me and my bestie.
