Two weeks ago the Hamburglar returned to McDonald's, after more than a decade of hiding, as a hipster-yet-handsome model rather than the cartoonish puppet. To keep up pace, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has just unveiled the new Colonel Sanders, a down-home Southern gent dressed in all white with a pristine black-ribbon bow tie, and played by a familiar face: Saturday Night Live's presidential impersonation expert Darrell Hammond.

In the first of three commercial spots, he puts a record on and spins around in a leather chair to reveal a white-haired Hammond donning thick-rimmed glasses and a neatly combed mustache. During his "State of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Address," he marvels at how much times have changed since his heyday, noting modern advancements like the International Space Station, double-sided tape, and cargo pants of all things.

Hammond's thoughts on the character are, of course, reverent and hilarious: "It's an honor to bring to life this iconic figure … but it doesn't hurt that KFC is paying me in chicken—which, at the time sounded like a good idea, because I was very hungry that day," he says in a press release.

The return of the Colonel marks KFC's 75th anniversary and with it come a few new menu items, like baked beans with slow-pulled chicken and a Finger Lickin' Good sauce seasoned with the chain's original recipe spices. On the brand's site, there's an interactive Hall of Colonels to show off the company's history and ColonelQuest, a '70s-styled, eight-bit video game harkening back to the Atari aesthetic.

So who's up next for the mascot revival? Maybe a reboot of the tiny Taco Bell chihuahua; or the peppy Rice Krispy trio Snap, Crackle, and Pop; or even a plaid-clad, adorably freckled Little Debbie.
