Don't want to get carried away on your night out? Stick to beer in straight glasses. According to a new study, curves can be dangerous when it comes to drinking alcohol.
Researchers at the University of Bristol in the U.K. set out to figure out how to manage unhealthy binge drinking. In one study, they went to three different pubs over two weekends to measure boozing in the wild. They found that people who drank from straight-sided glasses drank more slowly than people sipping from curved glasses.
In a separate study, they recruited 80 men and 80 women who were social drinkers and had no problem with alcohol. One group had beer in a curved glass with markings that showed a quarter, a half, and three quarters full. The other group had the same glass, with no measurements. People who drank from marked glasses drank more slowly.
The findings, presented at the British Psychological Society's annual conference, suggest that making small changes like changing the glass you drink from could have a big impact on how you consume alcohol. So if you want to take it easy during a happy hour with coworkers, keep your glass in mind.
