It's Saturday night and you're watching TV at home when suddenly you feel that familiar rumble: the longing for seasoned chunks of meat bubbling under cheddar cheese oozing out of a crunchy corn tortilla. The desire is overwhelming, but then you look outside and it's raining and Taco Bell is so far away (it has to be—what—10 minutes, round trip?), and your heart is filled with despair.
But now there is hope for a better (albeit lazier) world. In a conversation with Nation's Restaurant News, CEO Brian Niccol announced that the fast-food chain will be testing out a delivery service in an effort to become a more "on-demand" brand. He also said that the company plans to amp up its social media efforts and continue expanding its breakfast menu with a biscuit taco and dessert options with Cap'n Crunch Delights, but really it's the delivery service that has everyone excited.
Burger King offers delivery in some markets, and Starbucks is planning on rolling out its own service this year, but in general its difficult to incorporate a luxury like delivery into an industry defined by low wages and speedy service, so the logistics of the move are still murky.
"Even though it's the No. 1 request from consumers, we have to make sure we can give them an experience that's consistent with Taco Bell, and that's what we're working through," he said. "We have to figure it out, and I can tell you right now we don't have it figured out."
It's a bit blunt but, hey, where there's a will, there's a way!
UPDATE: July 8, 1:30 p.m.
Today is the official launch of the Tex-Mex fast food giant's delivery service at more than 200 locations. But those outposts are only in two states: California (Los Angeles, Orange County, San Franciso) and Texas (Dallas). Your kitchen-to-door tacos are made possible by a partnership with DoorDash, an on-demand delivery service that works like Uber. If you don't live in Cali or the Lone Star state but are desperate for cheap burritos, ask the brand to bring delivery to your area by tweeting with the hashtag #TacoBellDelivery.
Don't mind us, Taco Bell, we'll just be sitting here waiting from the some-odd 6,000 other locations to start bringing us some Sunday morning waffle tacos (with Diablo sauce!).
