Islay Scotch is special. I'm sure every brand of every type of Scotch says that about theirs. But Islay (pronounced Eye-la) — that's the really dram good stuff. Salty, smoky, and robust, it actually tastes like the land on which it's made. Sipping on it feels like standing next to a bonfire on the shore as salt water sprays off the rocks. One sip of Ardbeg will tell you this is no exaggeration.

Ardbeg takes their Scotch seriously. We're talking rocket science seriously. They sent a vial containing a class of compounds called terpenes to the International Space Station to help an experiment on gravity and maturation, or in whiskey speak: to see how they would interact with charred oak in space and on Earth. That's the process that makes the strong stuff really good. The vial is now back on the ground and Ardbeg is celebrating its return with a release of a third edition of its peatiest Scotch, Supernova. We can't think of a better way to celebrate a scientific acheivement.
If all science lectures were related to whiskey, we would have payed closer attention.
