The month of January is coming to a close, but it doesn't look like we're getting any closer to warm spring weather.

AccuWeather reports a polar vortex will rip through the Midwest and Northeast this weekend, bringing temperatures in the teens and single digits, reported Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. But it isn't stopping there: The Arctic blast will continue on into next week and will cause even harsher conditions.

"The end of January will bring the coldest air of the season for the Midwest and rival the Arctic blast from earlier this week as the coldest in the Northeast," Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.

Although long-time midwesterners might think they can handle the cold weather, this is going to be much worse than a little brisk air. "Temperatures can be held 20-to-40 degrees Fahrenheit below normal across most of the Midwest around the middle of next week," warned Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson.

Many parts of the plains, including Minneapolis and Chicago, could see "one or two days of subzero highs," Pydynowski noted. The Windy City might even set a record on Wednesday for the "day’s lowest high temperature," said Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines.

As for the East Coast in the coming days, it's not going to be much warmer. Pastelok adds that the low will be in the single digits, and the temperatures will be at least "10-to-20 degrees below normal."

The extreme conditions mean residents need to take proper precautions to stay safe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a handy checklist on its website for how to prepare for frigid weather, including how to "winterize" your home, ready your car, and "equip" for emergencies.

We think it's safe to say we're all ready for spring.
