How do you feel about getting paid to do something you already do sans compensation? Pretty great? Yah, samesies. That's exactly what researchers from a handful of U.S. universities wants to do: They want to give you straight dolla dolla bills to eat an avocado per day. Dream gig, no?
The study is a group effort between Loma Linda University; Penn State University; Tufts University; and the University of California, Los Angeles; and the goal is to examine the effect avocado has on reducing visceral adipose fat in the abdomen. Their hypothesis is, well, nothing short of incredibly encouraging — that avocados may very well help people lose stomach fat and promote weight loss.
The universities are recruiting 1,000 people in total — 250 from each college — to participate. To do so, you've got to be at least 25-years-old, have a waist 40-inches or larger for males and 35-inches or larger for females. Your avocado eating requirement could either be crushing one per day for six months or only no more than two avocados every month for six months.
Whether you're part of the guinea pig, avocado-scarfing group or the control, avocado-avoiding group, you'll be paid $300. (And the control group will get 24 avocados to enjoy after the study is over.) There is regular testing — both in the clinic and over the phone — throughout the six-month period.
If you're up for the gig, and get chosen — or if you're down to do a little at-home testing of your own — we've got a few (dozen) ideas on how to enjoy your avos.
