Though her wedding to Prince Harry is still a couple months away, Meghan Markle, 36, has always given her body the royal treatment. Here are all the ways she did right by her body before setting her wedding date:
1. She cooked her own meals.
Meghan said she made roasted cauliflower and chickpeas with hot curry powder at least once a week and topped her salads with the mix or ate it as a side dish, according to a The Chalkboard magazine interview published in 2015. "Every day I’m cooking something, even if it’s just a pesto I can put in the fridge for later in the week," Meghan told Shape in 2013.
2. She avoided fast food.
Although McDonalds and Burger King can be part of a balanced diet,
3. She was a part-time vegan.
"When I’m filming, I’m conscious of what I eat," Meghan said in a 2016 interview with Best Health magazine, during which she discussed life on the set of Suits, a TV series she starred in for seven seasons. For the future princess, that meant eliminating dairy, meat, and other animal products Monday through Friday. On the weekends, though, all food groups were fair game. "It’s all about balance," she said.
4. She ate fancy, healthy breakfasts.
Meghan kicked off her days drinking hot water with lemon and a bowl of oatmeal with bananas and agave syrup, according to a 2016 interview with Delish. Other times, the soon-to-be Mrs. Prince Harry had an acai bowl with berries, bee pollen, and special (read: expensive) honey made from the nectar of manuka trees, she told The Chalkboard magazine.
5. She hydrated like a champ.
Meghan refilled a mason jar with plain old filtered water all day long or sipped Pellegrino with lime, according to The Chalkboard magazine. "Hydrate, hydrate, all the time," Meghan told Shape. "Your skin will look better, everything will look really good."
6. She drank red wine.
"Of course I’m going to have that glass of wine. It’s delicious and I enjoy it," Meghan said in an interview with Best Health magazine. At the time, she was into Malbec, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir, according to Delish.com.
7. She ate all the carbs.
Meghan's go-tos are pasta and fries, she told Best Health magazine."I don’t ever want to feel deprived," she said. "I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things."
8. She exercised for all the right reasons.
Like most people, Meghan knows that sometimes, working out sounds "absolutely dreadful," according to a 2017 interview with Women’s Health UK. "I always remind myself of how good it will feel afterward," she said. "Euphoric, almost!"
9. She ran often.
While working on the set of Suits, Meghan ran to "clear her head" and break a quick sweat, according to Women’s Health UK: "Running has always been my form of moving meditation, which I relish because it allows me to get out of my head," Meghan said. "I need [running] as much to clear my head as I do for keeping in shape," she told Shape.
Still, she preferred running with a bud to total solitude. Her favorite form of exercise (at least back in 2015) was a six-mile run with her friend Heather, according to The Chalkboard magazine. When she had no time for a long sweat session, she'd pound the pavement quickly with her dog, she told Best Health magazine.
10. She worked with a personal trainer on set.
While shooting Suits, Meghan scored some quality one-on-one workouts with personal trainer Craig McNamee, a chiropractor, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and co-founder of Catalyst Health training facility in Toronto, Canada, according to Women’s Health UK.
11. She broke up daily workouts into 15-minute sessions.
On set, in her trailer, Meghan would squeeze in short bursts of exercise using Tracy Anderson fitness DVDs, she told Shape. The workouts targeted specific muscle groups, like your glutes, core, and legs, with cardio and strength training via bodyweight moves or lifting light weights, according to the Tracy Anderson Method website. "You can do little 15-minute increments," she said. "By the end of the day you’ve done a full workout."
12. She did hot yoga regularly.
Meghan has long taken cues from her mom, Doria Radlan: "My mom was a yoga instructor, so that practice is in my blood," Meghan told Women’s Health UK, noting that vinyasa and hot yoga were her favorites. More recently, she was been spotted in Los Angeles at hip-hop yoga studio Y7, according to a 2018 E! News report. "I love an intense vinyasa class," she said in the Women's Health UK interview, "and even better if it's blasting hip-hop and done in a dark room with candlelight."
13. She went to Pilates classes.
"Pilates Platinum is hands down the best thing you could do for your body," Meghan told Harper’s Bazaar UK in 2017, referring to her go-to studio.
The 55-minute classes involve a Megaformer, the strength-training machine with a moving platform attached to springs. "The Megaformer uses resistance to recruit as many muscles as possible during the exercises, which helps you get a full-body workout in less time," says Sebastien Lagree, creator of the machine and founder of the Lagree Fitness Training method.
The workouts deliver results super fast, according to Meghan, who likely performed Lagree exercises such as the Catfish, where you stand on the platform, hold the handle bars of the machine, and slide your feet in and out from under your hips. "Your body changes immediately…give it two classes and you will see a difference," she told Harper's Bazaar UK.
14. She welcomed new exercise classes.
Meghan told told Women's Health UK she was excited to try out the SBC (Skinny Bitch Collective), an exclusive fitness club created by personal trainer Russell Bateman after being referred by her friend Millie Macintosh, a reality TV star and social media influencer.
When reached for comment, Bateman wouldn’t confirm whether Meghan had taken SBC, but if she did, she would gotten a hell of a dose of cardio, with bodyweight training moves and partner exercises involving piggyback rides and and holding hands.
15. She hung with other healthy people.
The easiest way to improve your health, Meghan told The Chalkboard magazine, is to "surround yourself with people who live a healthy lifestyle… it rubs off."
