After the raging success of pizza ATMs and champagne vending machines, McDonald's has decided to make its own automated fast-food dispenser dedicated to the iconic Big Mac.
That's right, a touchscreen machine doled out free burgers to McD's fans in Boston for one day only. Operating between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the machine fed customers fresh-from-the-grill Big Macs that were prepared on site at the chain's Kenmore Square outpost.
There was one catch, though. Customers looking to snag a burger on the house had to input their Twitter handles or email addresses to generate promotional tweets.
To be clear about its purpose, a McDonald's spokesperson told The Boston Globe that the machine was primarily a marketing tool and not a step toward futuristic, employee-less restaurants. Which is great, because we'd hate to feel guilty about partaking in a free, instant burger serving machine.
It's also worth noting that this marketing stunt comes directly after McDonald's gave away just 10,000 bottles of its precious Mac sauce to lucky fans (who then sold it for upwards of $10,000 per 11-ounce container). Both are plays at pushing the company's brand new burgers, the mini Mac Jr. and the giant-size Grand Mac.
