When I first heard about using Thanksgiving leftovers to create a cocktail I thought I was getting prank called, er, emailed. But after taking a second look at the craft ingredients involved, I knew we had to visit the forward-thinking bar behind this holiday-themed creation, Dos Urban Cantina in Chicago.
Once there, I watched the bar manager whirl together this seemingly odd drink—laced with real turkey broth!—and transform savory ingredients into a dreamy, slightly sweet drink anyone would be more than happy to throw back to survive a family gathering.
A seasonal version of the classic martini, it's essentially candied stuffing in a cup. In it are thyme-infused Plymouth gin, the herbal aperitif wine cocchi americano, orange saffron bitters, and—arguably most important of all—a simple syrup made with turkey broth and seasoned with garlic and black pepper. Plus there's an amazing homemade crouton garnish that the bar's cocktail consultant Larry Rice called "stuffing on a stick."
But before you brush this off as some culinary stunt that probably doesn't taste good at all, take note. This is an extremely balanced cocktail that gives you a sweet, candied herb flavor. It's not by any means overpowering with the scent or taste of turkey drippings or heavy and bread-y. Honestly, it's a remarkable mixture that everyone should try at least once. Who knows, it may be better to drink your dinner than sit at the table with your crazy aunt and drunk uncle.
