Once upon a time, there were grow-your-own boyfriends. But it's 2018, and we've graduated to wine box boyfriends — while the blue sponges "never argued" and "always agreed," they didn't come with the good stuff.
We have artist and writer Michael James Schneider to thank for the hilarious photo series posted Monday. Schneider and his wine box boyfriend have since racked up 99,000 likes and 22,000 retweets, and people are ready for more.
Schneider told VICE that the inspiration for the project came from — what else — a bad break-up. After the 2015 split, Schneider said he "self-medicated through wine" and had plenty of Franzia boxes left behind. "I always thought it would be sad, funny, and a little sweet to make a companion from the empty cartons left over," he said.
Franz, as this quiet man is appropriately named, is made from Franzia, Black Box, Bota Box, and House Wine boxes. Franz took part in a photoshoot with Schneider outside and at the grocery store. There are also pictures of the happy couple cooking pasta and lounging in bed with the cat. You know, typical couple stuff.
Schneider joked on Twitter that the two are registered at BevMo, and agreed that a Christmas card follow-up shoot is a great idea.
While wine box boyfriend is our favorite iteration so far, Franzia's Instagram shows it's not the first time the boxes have been recycled into something hilarious. There are Franzia Halloween costumes, a "Franziahenge" constructed to look like Stonehenge, and a Franzia beach bum on display. Keep on keepin' on, winos.
