Diet Coke is one of those drinks that is less a drink, more a lifestyle. For all the other Diet Coke junkies out there, get ready: your lifeblood is getting a makeover. Coca-Cola announced today a new look for the zero-calorie drink, as well as four new flavors, all set to roll out this month.
Diehards, before you freak out, the original design and taste isn't going anywhere. Coca-Cola has assured fans Diet Coke as you know it will still be available in all its normal shapes (glass bottles, classic 12-ounce cans, etc.).
The new generation, on the other hand, is a little bit taller. Diet Coke's new design still contains 12 ounces of soda, but is slimmer and taller, with a vertical red strip lining its side that is "a Coca-Cola red disc that has gone for a walk," according to James Sommerville, the vice president of Coca-Cola Global Design. The shape is similar to Dasani Sparkling cans and LaCroix's Cúrate line.
Now, the good stuff. If you're a fan of Cherry Coke or Diet Coke With Lime, you'll want to try these new flavors. The Coca-Cola research and development team tested more than 30 Diet Coke flavors, playing with tropical, citrus, and botanical notes before settling on the four new flavors.
First up, there's Ginger Lime, which sounds like a Moscow Mule minus the vodka, so needless to say we're pretty pumped to taste it. There's also Feisty Cherry, which will likely please Cherry Coke fans, and Zesty Blood Orange. Orange and Coke seem like an odd combo, but we'll let you be the judge of that. Finally, there's Twisted Mango, which, again, seems a little strange, but could work given Diet Coke's crisp taste.
The four new flavors (and the original Diet Coke in its new packaging) are rolling out this month, and will be sold as individual cans and in eight-packs.
