Despite what Rachel Bilson and Cara Delevingne might lead you to believe, there's no cute way to eat a Magnum ice cream bar. When the crunchy outer shell cracks, as it's supposed to, you're left scrambling to keep the chocolate pieces in check as you scarf down your ice cream. Now that the luxe ice cream brand is venturing into pints, that problem is solved — and you still get to enjoy the famous chocolate shell.
Launching in mid-January, Magnum Tubs come in four flavors, and each has a shell of Belgian chocolate lining the carton (look closely at the tub for a visual!). Before opening it, you're supposed to "crack" the tub by squeezing the sides, causing shards of chocolate to spread out into every bite. There's also a thick layer of the Belgian chocolate on top, much like Ben & Jerry U.K.'s "Topped" pints, to smash into after opening.
Each flavor is crazy-rich; unlike all the low-cal, high-protein ice creams currently trending, these pints are about as decadent as you can get. An entire pint will set you back upwards of 1,000 calories, though they're so rich that you'll be satisfied long before you get halfway through a pint. Delish got the chance to sample the new flavors early, and here's how they stacked up:
Milk Chocolate Hazelnut
Chocolate hazelnut ice cream, hazelnuts, and milk chocolate shards, crowned with a milk chocolate shell with more hazelnuts — whoa, baby. It's like a bowl of Nutella, but with more of a nutty taste than a straight-sugar taste. This one was pretty well received.
Dark Chocolate Raspberry
Raspberry ice cream with dark chocolate pieces, topped with a dark chocolate shell. People were split on this one; some said it had a weird aftertaste, and non-raspberry fans obviously didn't like it. It's heavier than you'd expect for a fruit flavor (this is Magnum's, after all), but the dark chocolate balances out the sweetness well.
White Chocolate Vanilla
Vanilla ice cream with white chocolate shards and a white chocolate shell. Despite the vanilla base, white chocolate is the overpowering flavor here. After a bite or two, any more seems too sweet. However, if you're a big white chocolate fan, this might be your dream scoop.
Milk Chocolate Vanilla
This one was the clear winner, despite sounding kind of basic. The combo of creamy vanilla and milk chocolate combo is simple but delicious, kind of like milk and cookies. You can't help but love it. One editor said he could eat the whole pint while watching 3 to 4 romantic comedies. We don't doubt him.
Magnum debuted its pints in Europe and Australia in 2017 and is launching them across the U.S. in the second week of January. They'll be sold for a retail price of $5.49 per tub.
