Gingerbread houses can be an exercise in humility: The gorgeous ones are often so rock-hard you risk chipping a tooth to eat them, and the ones that 90 percent of us mere mortals attempt each season often look more like a Pinterest #nailedit meme. Still, it isn't the holiday season without the scent of those ginger- and-cinnamon-spiced cookies.
Halo Top Creamery must have taken note. The ice cream maker known for its low-calorie, high-protein pints just launched a flavor inspired by the seasonal favorite called Gingerbread House.
Unlike the real deal, you won't need a trip to the dentist after taking a bite (though the company does recommend leaving it out for a few minutes to soften, to get that fresh-from-the-scoop-shop texture). The ice cream's studded with ginger cookie pieces and a swirl of frosting, echoing the flavors you grew up with over the holidays. Minus the gum drops, of course, because while Halo Top dabbles in the bizarre (remember that dystopian robot ad?), they're not sadistic.
Each pint packs 360 calories and 20 grams of protein, compared to about 340 calories, on average, for a 3-ounce gingerbread man cookie.
This news comes just days after Halo Top announced its first brick-and-mortar store, which opens on Nov. 15 in Canoga Park, California, at the Westfield Topanga mall. To celebrate, the store's giving away free ice cream all day, including its new soft serve.
Gingerbread House wasn't on the shop's initial menu, but you'll see it in grocery stores nationwide later this month. If you can't wait that long, though, you can buy pints starting today at icecreamsource.com.
