While growing up in Rome, Giada De Laurentiis learned how to cook perfect pasta from her grandfather. That specialty paved the way for the chef, who has gone on to host multiple television shows, write bestselling cookbooks, and open a restaurant in Las Vegas. But even the pros aren't immune to kitchen disasters.
In a recent interview with Bravo, De Laurentiis revealed her biggest cooking fail of all time. And it will probably make you feel better about any mistake you've ever made while preparing for your Thanksgiving feast.
At the beginning of her career, De Laurentiis worked as a caterer for a family, and the first meal she made for them was Thanksgiving. "I love cooking Thanksgiving. It's actually, for me, one of the easier meals to cook because there's so much planning you can do in advance, that you can plan it out in different stages," she toldThe Feast.
The trouble is, the family had a large dog and De Laurentiis wasn't used to working around a pet in the kitchen. "I tripped over the dog once I put the turkey on the platter. Once the turkey hit the floor, that dog got to it before I did. So, there was no longer a turkey for Thanksgiving, but lots of sides," she admitted. "The woman I was cooking for had some pasta sauces in her pantry, so I whipped up some pasta really fast. It was one of my first jobs out of school. I was pretty horrified."
Since those early days, the Food Network star has pretty much perfected the art of Thanksgiving dinner, crafting one of the cheesiest mashed potato recipes we will ever see for The Today Show. I mean look at this cheese, er, potato pull:
