When it comes to zero-calorie soda drinkers, there are two types: Diet Coke obsessives and ride-or-die Coke Zero fans. Sure, there are other diet drinks, but it's hard to find the borderline obsessive passion that these devotees have. So you better believe the internet freaked out the second Coca-Cola announced plans to overhaul Coke Zero.
The news started trending on Twitter within hours of its announcement. Dubbed a "reinvention" of the drink by CEO James Quincey, the company plans to stop selling Coke Zero this August, replacing it with Coke Zero Sugar. The new soda has zero calories and — as you might have guessed — zero sugar. But the real difference is the flavor, which is supposed to taste closer to that of regular Coke, Business Insider reported. Of course, anyone who buys Coke Zero specifically for its flavor will have to start stockpiling it over the next two weeks.
It's only natural the soda company would vie for a drink that can appeal to people's rising interest in lower-sugar diets. In fact, Coke Zero Sugar's already been deemed a hit in other parts of the world, including Europe, Latin America, and Africa, according to CNN Money.
While Coke Zero's sales grew 3.5 percent last year — and Diet Coke's dropped 1.5 percent — those increases are no match for Coke Zero Sugar. It had double-digit growth worldwide.
Still, Coke Zero fans are not happy. Not happy at all.
As one astute Twitter user observed, no one should be more devastated by this than Jude Law.
Although if you try Coke Zero Sugar and aren't into it, you can always bake it into a Coca-Cola Cake. You know, in case you're craving sugar. Or make it into slushies and carnitas tacos.
